Career in Film Making
Films have always formed a part of our life. Old and the young ones have been fascinated by films since its origination. Long back only few people were interested in making a career in films. Rather we can say there was not much scope in the olden days, but with the booming satellite channels and advancement in film technology, scope has in film making has widen considerably. It is one of the most creative fields and of late has become very competitive. Making a film is basically a team work were different creative minds contribute to the creative input. There are various departments, some of which are mentioned below.
- Director
At the starting level one should select physics, chemistry and biology as their specialized subject. After graduation one
can select the basic or degree level qualification for a medical profession that is MBBS
(Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) which is of 5 1/2 years duration. After
completing the medical school, you need to enter a residency program that is three to
seven years long depending on your area of specialization
- Editor
Editor’s job is to see that the flow of the movie is smooth. He has to cut the unnecessary portions
and advice the director about the same. He has to coordinate with the director and give his
creative input by letting him know why a particular scene is not required or how the
sequence of the scene should be. The job of the editor can sometime be quite
stressful and repetitive as he has to watch the film again and again while
editing.
- Cameraman
The job of the camera man is to capture the movie in his camera. He has to shoot in such
a way that holds the interest of the audience. He should also have the knowledge of
lighting and color combinations. A good cameraman is able to cover the shortfalls that
might be present on the location. By applying his creative tricks he can make a location
look very nice which otherwise might not be good.
- Dialogue writer
The success of any film largely depends on well written powerful dialogue. The job of the
dialogue writer is to write dialogues as per the situation in the movie. It should touch the
heart of the audience and should have a repeat value.
Apart from the above mentioned category there are many other categories like
cinematographer, set designer, sound recorder, production manager etc.
- The Procedure
Anybody aspiring to enter the film industry should first decide in which category he
would like to pursue. Accordingly he can select the course as per his interest. The
course duration and fees vary according to the field which one selects. For example
the course duration to become a director will be much longer and will have a higher
fee as compared to others like a dialogue writer. The course can be pursued after
high school. You should have some personal attributes like visualizing, working in
close coordination with others, leadership qualities etc.
- The Remuneration
If successful remuneration will not be a problem at all. Initially you might be paid
low but once you establish yourself then there will be no shortage of work and there
will be no looking back.
- A Word of Caution
For all those who get carried away by the glamour of the film industry should be aware
that it’s not a smooth sailing in this field. Sometimes one has to work without any
remuneration during the initial phase. Also, there is not guarantee that you work will
be appreciated. The audience might reject your work and you might not find any takers
in the industry.
