Career as a Lawyer
A lawyer plays an important role in the society through the practice of law.
A degree in law can open wide variety of career options. In order to become a
lawyer, one must obtain a degree and fulfill educational and training requirements for
admission to a law society. Becoming a lawyer is not an easy task, it takes time and
effort and hard work - but if you're willing to make the commitment, it can lead to a
challenging and rewarding career.
The main function of an advocate is to act in the best interest of his clients. Lawyers
serve as both advocates and advisers. As advocates, they speak for their clients in
court by presenting supportive evidence. As advisers, they counsel their clients on
their legal rights and obligations.
A strong education in law school also provides the ability to pursue employment
opportunities outside of the legal profession in areas such as journalism, finance,
insurance, education, politics, civil services, publishing, social work and many more.
Although lawyers affect nearly every aspect of society in a range of positions and
industries, their basic duties are the same to represent the needs of their clients in
civil and criminal trials. However, other job duties vary dramatically. Some
Lawyers work in private practice, either as self employed attorneys or as associates
or partners in large law firms. Lawyers can specialize in bankruptcy, international, elder,
probate, or environmental law. The growing field of intellectual property is also seeing a
growing level of attention from lawyers.
Lawyers need to perform wide variety of task on a daily basis, depending upon the need
of their clients or employer. They spend a good amount of their time completing paperwork
and conducting investigations, interviewing witnesses, researching past legal cases,
drawing up and reviewing legal contracts.
Skills: - The main job of the lawyer is to
argue and speak in favor of his client. There is a lot of communication involved as the
lawyers have to prove their point and win the case for his or her client. So the lawyer
should have exceptional written and oral communication skills. Patience is another
quality that one should possess as the case might stretch too long which might result in frustration to the lawyer.
Education: - To become a lawyer you need
to pass out four years of undergraduate degree from an accredited university and then
three years of law school. It is followed by a 2 day bar and ethics examination which is
based to test of ethical principal and legal principles and knowledge of law.
Remuneration: - With the increase in the
civil and criminal cases the demand for lawyer as steadily increased. After completing the
required course and passing the examination a student can work on apprenticeship basis
under an experience lawyer. Later on when the lawyer is on his own, he can charge on
case to case basis. Remuneration of the lawyers is considered one of the best and
very lucrative.
